Magdalena is a media lawyer and former BBC business journalist. She began her first novel during her MA at St Mary’s University. ‘The Worker in the Field’ is set in 1980s communist Czechoslovakia. Josef Novinka is a happy comrade living in the industrial city of Brno when his artist wife is killed, leaving behind their six year old son. Her death triggers a series of events which bring Josef to question his marriage and faith in the communist ideal. When the regime turns against him, he realises he must find a way out to salvage a future for himself and his son and to uncover the truth behind his wife’s death.
